RP/ EU Business Conference
The Business Conference, whose preparation workshop’s the BCC-P attended and contributed to in April, was held on May 8th and received extensive national press coverage. The Key issues and proposals of the European Business community, led by the ECCP and supported by the BCC-P, and the EU Commission were presented to the Philippine Government and focused on improving the potential for European investment in the sectors of Agriculture, Manufacturing, Services and IT.
A review of the next steps to place “Europe firmly on the radar screen” of the Philippine Government will be made at the next European Nations Council executive meeting in early June.
EU Market Access Team (MAT)
The EU Delegation are setting up an MAT consisting of the Chairmen & Presidents of the five EU Chambers of Commerce, EU countries Business Associations, the Commercial counselors of the EU country’s Embassies here; plus key private companies in the selected priority sectors.
Having established the ground rules, the ENC will decide on a uniform strategy for the selected sectors it will be recommending for priority under the MAT team. With over 1,200 members the 4 existing Chambers, plus the newly founded German Chamber and the smaller EU Business Associations, represent a powerful lobbying platform for both these key MAT projects as well as generally pushing the Philippines Government to be more proactive in the ASEAN / EU FTA discussions.
Meeting with James Moran EU Secretary - General External Relations in ASEAN.
The ENC reiterated its concern by the apparent lack of interest by the Philippine Government as indicated to Moran (similarly given in May to Karl Falkenberg the EU Secretary- General for ASEAN) regarding their being part of the first phase countries pushing for the ASEAN/ EU FTA progressing discussions together with Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia.
James Moran was encouraged that the European business sector, through the 5 EU Chambers (ENC), was willing to encourage the raising of the level of interest within the Philippine Government for greater pro-activity in the ASEAN/ EU FTA discussions
Best regards,
Leslie J. Stokes
